Nordic excellence across the world’s leading film festivals during 2025

2025 has marked another milestone year for Nordic cinema. At Berlinale, we celebrated a historic Golden Bear for Dreams and a standout Nordic presence across Competition and Panorama.

In March, the first edition of Visions Nordiques took place in Paris in collaboration with CNC and Institut suédois — five days of premieres, conversations, and industry-building that deepened our region’s creative connections with France.

In Cannes, our slate was powerful: Sentimental Value (Joachim Trier) and Eagles of the Republic (Tarik Saleh) in main Competition, while The Love That Remains (Hlynur Pálmason) premiered in Un Certain Regard. Sentimental Value capped its run with the Grand Prix here and also five nominations at European Film Awards in November. At the Marché du Film, we hosted Framing Democracy: Panel on Film and Freedom of Expression, bringing together key voices from politics, culture, and civil society to explore how film can foster dialogue, strengthen free expression, and encourage democratic resilience.

In Toronto, features like Egghead Republic and Sentimental Value drew major international attention, while at both CPH:DOX and IDFA, compelling Nordic documentaries shone across multiple sections.

Nordic short films also made a strong impact in 2025. At Clermont-Ferrand, one of the world’s leading short-film festivals, Nordic filmmakers stood out with bold new voices and acclaimed works, further strengthening the region’s reputation for innovative and artistically daring short-form storytelling.

We are already looking forward to 2026!
